The rank of Eagle Scout has been awarded to many who went on to become astronauts, noted athletes, legislators and business leaders—all of whom demonstrated Scout Spirit, leadership and service in the Boy Scouts of America. John Rettew has guided more than 200 Scouts to earn this prestigious achievement.
A Philadelphia native, John got involved in scouting at age 8 and remained active while at Episcopal Academy and at Haverford College, where he captained the football team while earning a degree in psychology. He went on to be manager of advertising services for TV Guide, working in publishing for more than 40 years. In 1984, he married Ellie at St. David’s Episcopal Church, where he was a lay minister.
“We dated for five years before she said ‘yes,’” he says. He and Ellie have lived at Simpson Meadows since 2014. They have two children, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. And just in case you were wondering, scouting runs in the family. Along with John, his father, son and grandson were or are all Eagle Scouts.
In addition to raising his own family, John helped shape many other young lives through his ongoing contributions to scouting, for which he was honored with numerous awards. He held leadership roles with Devon Boy Scout Troop 50 and on the executive board of the Chester County Council, BSA. He edited the Horseshoe Scout Reservation Alumni Association newsletter and authored history books commemorating the 50th, 60th and 75th anniversary of the troop and the 75th anniversary of the council.
With nearly 70 years in scouting and other community service, as well as marriage and family, and a fulfilling career, John knows how to live well and fully. His advice to others who want to do the same?
“Do fun things!” he says. “And listen, listen, listen.”
